How to choose the right dog breed and the right dog

It is very exciting to look at different kind of dogs and dog breeds. It is important, however, that you think about what life you want to live with your dog and what activities you want to share with your dog. Are you interested in hunting, do you want a rat dog, do you want to compete in agility or in the show rooms? Or do you want a calm social dog that don't need very long walks 3 times a day?

This is the most important step when you're planning to buy a dog. Pick a dog that suites the level of acitivity that you are planning to offer your dog. If you buy a dog made for hunting rabbits and you expect the dog to lay in front of your fireplace all day long there will be a problem. The dog will create activity if you dont offer him activity. He might start hunting your kids or eating on your shoes or.... The best thing you can do is to get a dog that suites your normal life. Then you'll get a happy dog as it was bred for the purpose you want it for.

There are about 300 different dog breeds to choose between. Apart from that you have mixed breeds as well. Whatever dog you choose - always remember that how cute the dog is or how it looks doesn't really matter. Pick at dog that suites your normal life. If you never take long walks choose a social dog that dont demand that much exercise. Then you get a good friend for life.....

To buy a mixed breed

We have been asked what you should think about when you buy a mixed breed. It is not easy to give a simple answer to that question. As we mentioned above there are a large number of pure breeds. When you buy a pure breed there is a bigger chance that you know what you get (see our information below). When you buy a mix breed it is hard to know what you get. In one litter you might find different kind of dogs - both in looks and in temper.

The only way to know approximately how the puppies will turn out is to have a look at puppies from a previous litter from the same parents. But it kan always be a new mix in the new litter... You have never a warranty how the dog will behave or look like.

If you are planning to buy a mixed breed you could increase your chances to get a good dog by thinking about this:

1. Meet the parents! Are both dogs nice and that kind of dog that you like there are a good chance that the puppies will turn out to be a nice and suitable dog for you.

2. When the puppies has been delivered - visit them an watch them grow. Then you'll se which puppy who's tuff, week, nice, full of action and so on....

3. Choose a puppy that suites your lifestyle. Do you want an active dog with a lot of energy - pick the dog with much action and go. You will have to be a strong and consequent leader and offer long walks and exercises for the brain.

If you want a week dog with a mild temper - choose a more week puppy. Don't choose a really tuff dog if you dont have any experience from racing dogs.

If the breeder is a good breeder she/he recommends a puppy that suites your life and your family.

A good piece of advise is to think more about the temper than the looks of the dog. The temper of the dog have to match your life and your acivity level. And... no matter how your dog looks i promise that you will find it beautiful and perfect when you have taken care of it for a couple of months. As it becomes your friend it is the best dog in the world - even if it isn't perfect!

Good luck!

To buy a pure breed

If you choose a pure dog breed it's more likely that you know what you get. But remember - there is a variation within every breed. Both the looks and the temper may vary a lot. There are examples of dog owners who buy a new dog of the same breed after their old dog has passed away - and they get a different kind of dog. Sometimes people choose to buy a puppy from a small mother and father and expect to ge a small version of the pure breed. It turns out that the puppy grows into a large version of the pure breed instead. So it is not always possible to predict how the puppies will turn out - even if you can take a look at the pedigree .

So, when you buy a puppy it is hard to know what you get. It's the same thing with inhereted diseases. It's more common within some dog breeds. Check this out before you buy a pure breed.
