To travel with your dog

If you do have a small dog it is possible to bring the dog when you go on holiday.

Travelling within your own country

Hund i väskaTravelling within your own country the rules often are easier to handle. If you buy a good bag - special made for your dog - you can go by air, train or coach. But remember to check in advance to be sure that you get a seat in the area where dogs are allowed. If you go by air the weight of your dog determines wheather it´s possible or not to bring the dog inside the cabin. Normally there is a limit (6-8 kilos). Check with the airline company. Normally you need to mention the dog when you book your ticket.

NB: Remember to check the rules thoroughly with your airline company. The rules may vary a great deal between different airlines. Always make a reservertion for your dog as well when you do your booking. Check what rules the airline has on the bag you shall use for transport. It is important that it is water proof in case the dog should be nervous and "a small accident" should occur during the journey.

Travelling to a different country

Travelling abroad requires same proceedure as mentioned above. Always check with the airline that it's OK to bring your dog. If you go on a charter tour it's normally not accepted to bring a dog. On regular flights it's normally easier. You need to pay extra for bringing your dog - often you pay an amount per kilo of your dog!!

When you travel abroad it's very important that you check the rules within the country you travel to and within your own country. There are regulations and rules that varies a lot between different countries. Check what vaccinations are compulsory, what deworming program is compulsory. Check this early! There might be rules that demands a vaccination in two steps or somethings like that. You need to start in time!! If you are uncertain about the rules check with the embassy. Don't forget to check the rules of your own country. It's nice to be able to bring your dog back home again - as well.

You need a certain amount of time before you leave. For example to vaccinate your dog against rabies takes about 4-6 months when the country requires a certificate that says that your dog has antibodies in the blood before it could enter the country. You need to take a blood test and send it to a laboratory . Your vet normally knows how to handle this.

Another thing is dewormning. Sometimes you need to deworm your dog when  you leave your country - and then deworm it again in the country you have been in - in order to take it back home again. Cestodes are dangerous even for humans. We don't want to spread it to areas where it doesn't belong. So always follow these rules. Deworm your dog in a proper way!

Note that the rules keep changing all the time. If you visited a country a couple of years ago the rules might have changed since then. Always check the current rules! Our text on this page is not to be concidered as any guidelines. Always check with the embassy, your vet, the customs or other authority to be certain how to handle your dog. Some countries don´t allow dogs unless it has been in quarantine for a certain amount of time before entering the country. Then it might be better to leave the dog at home - or travel to another country.

Where shall we stay?

If you go on holiday you can go to a hotel. Check in advance if they allow dogs. There are wome hostels that allows dogs as well.

If you intend to leave your small dog at home. Try to find a friend to take care of your dog in first place. If you don't have that opportunity you can choose to leave it at a "Dog hotel".

Remember - visit the place before you book! It's important to see the place and to meet the person you takes care of the dogs. You should get a good feeling - otherwise you will spend the holiday wondering how your best friend - your small dog - is.

There are small places or big ones. Check around until you find a good one. It's important that your dog is OK during your holiday.
